Getting ready for Convention and a new start

: Matt Cull

On Wednesday last week, the IoF Fundraising Convention Board met for the last time before this year's Fundraising Convention, which starts on Monday 4th July. I'm not sure why but I think this could be the best Convention for many years and recently they have all been excellent. It feels very exciting to be a part of. Bring it on, I say.

There is a huge amount of talent in the fundraising sector but even the most experienced know there is more to learn and new ways to think and behave. Convention is the best place to absorb ideas, find inspiration and set new goals.

This year we have a new venue in the form of the Barbican. A new venue for a new beginning after a year when many might have buckled and looked desperately for an easy way out. But fundraisers aren't like that. We wobble but we don't fall down.

We have taken a lot of criticism this year. Some of it deserved; a great deal not. But it is now time to move on, to look forward and stand tall again having listened and learnt where necessary but certainly not change all the brilliant things we do on a daily basis. What was wonderful before is still wonderful today.

It is also a time to remember those we have lost some brilliance that shone brightly and touched so many lives. Gone but not forgotten. One of the sessions I am looking forward to most this year has nine rising stars presenting for the first time. In a nutshell, that is what Convention is all about. Celebrating the best and the new.

If you haven't bought your ticket yet, do it now. You won't regret it.
